Norman Peter Lohstreter

December 20, 1946 - August 15, 2012

Biography

Beloved husband and devoted father Pete Lohstreter, 65, passed away Wednesday August 15, 2012 from a hard fought battle with ALS. Born on December 20, 1946 in Athens, Texas and raised in Garland, Texas, he is survived by his wife of 43 years Lea Lohstreter, daughter Chesley Lohstreter Garrett and her husband Billy Garrett, and mother in law Laura McMurray. His father Leonard Lohstreter, mother Dorothy Loper Lohstreter and brother Jack Lohstreter preceded him in death.

Pete was an amazing teacher. After graduating from Garland High School and East Texas State University with his Bachelors in Physics and Chemistry, he spent 28 years of his career teaching Physics and Chemistry at North Garland High School where he was science department head. During this time, he was presented with many awards including outstanding teacher of the metroplex and Teacher of the Year for Garland ISD. After retiring from public school he went on to teach at The Hockaday School. There he taught Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology, Astronomy and was the advisor and coach of the Hockaday JETS robotics team. He was instrumental in many scientific advances to the school.

He was a past president and life member of the Garland Jaycees. He was also chairman of Garland Jaycees Jubilee and for many years chairman of the Garland Junior Miss Pageant.

His viewing will be Tuesday August 21, 2012 from 6pm-8pm at Williams Funeral Directors, 1600 S. Garland Ave. and a Memorial Service will be Saturday August 25, 2012 at 4pm at First United Methodist Church Garland, 801 W. Ave. B.

In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting gifts to the ALS Foundation or to The Hockaday School in memory of Pete Lohstreter to support the science program.
